당신의 인생을 관통하는 주제는?

누구나 저마다의 삶이 하나의 궤적을 이루며 목표지점에 도달하길 바란다. 우리가 태어날 때 어떤 목표나 목적을 가지고 태어나진 않는다. 단지 살아가면서 그 소명(?) 또는 어떤 알수없는 거대한 힘에 의해 자신의 운명이 조절당하고 있다는 느낌이 들기 시작한다.

나의 삶은 극히 평범한 시작이었고, 거기에 대해 만족하는 편이었다. 비교적 중산층 이상의 가정에서 부족함 없는 초중고 교육을 받고 대학도 원래 목표(애초에 목표가 없었을 지도 모르겠지만)와는 다르지만 자연과학을 전공하는 것으로 정함으로써 취미보다는 높은 수준의 공부를 제대로 할수 있는 기회를 가지게 된 것이다. 그렇다고 날마다 도서관에서 죽치고 않아 열공하는 모범생은 아니었고 다양한 써클활동과 연애경험등으로 대학교와 대학원 시절을 보낸것 같다.

지금 생각하면 목적없는 삶이 거의 30대까지 이어지고 그 당시 미팅이나 소개팅에서 상대가 ‘앞으로 뭘하실 건가요 ‘라고 질문하면 잠시 생각해보다 ‘물리학과 같은 어려운 학문을 일반 대중에게 쉽게 전달하는 일을 해보고 싶다’라고 말한 기억이 있다. 무심코 내뱉은 말이지만 지나고 보면 현재 내가 시간을 보내고 있는 상당한 부분이 유튜브에서의 물리학 또는 과학/ 공학 지식 전달에 할애하고 있는 사실을 보면 역시 사람은 자신이 내뱉은 말에서 자유로울 수 없다는 말이 진리인거 같다. 젊은 시절 어린 치기에 잠시 사업가라는 다소 거창한 비젼에 덜컥 회사를 시작하고 투자를 받고 한창 연구에 박차가 붙을 무렵 돈이 떨어져 타의로 회사가 M&A되는 쓴 경험도 했으며 회사 운영에 있어서는 자본의 힘이 얼마나 강력한지도 몸소 체험한 바 있다.

지금은 소확행 (소소하지만 확실한 행복)을 추구하며 하루 하루 의미 있는 날이 되길 기대하며 핵심 가치의 왜곡없는 전달에 최선을 다하며 현재의 시간을 보내고 싶다.

자본이 투여 되면 빨리 규모가 확장되고 새로운 사람들을 보다 많이 만나고 그들에게 더 큰 영향을 끼칠 수 있겠지만, 한 걸음씩 천천히 전진하는 것도 장기적으로는 더 큰 비젼을 실현하는 데 유리할 수도 있을 것이다.

누구에게나 자신의 삶을 관통하는 주제가 있다. 나에게는 처음이 자연에 대한 이해이고 물리학으로 시작했고 반도체 회사에서 시스템의 중요성과 공학적 문제에 대한 엔지니어로서의 마인드, 스타트업에서는 리더쉽과 공동체 의식, 사업가의 마인드, 인간 관계와 순발력의 중요성을 배울 수 있었고 (이것들을 잘했다는 의미는 아니다..), 유튜브 토트샘으로는 포기하지 않고 한걸음씩 나아가는 인내력, 대중의 관심과 필요를 어떻게 자신이 추구하는 가치와 조화시키는 방법은 여전히 시험하는 중이다.

이러한 삶의 궤적이 앞으로 어떤 창대한 미래로 이어져 갈지 나도 기대되며 걱정을 접어 두고 이 모든 것들을 이미 알고 있고 예비해 놓은 존재에게 깨달을 수 있는 지혜를 달라고 구해본다.
